Nuit blanche 2014

Montréal, February 10, 2014 – On Saturday, March 1, for the 11th edition of Nuit blanche à Montréal, the Musée d’art contemporain (MAC) is offering a wide array of activities relating to time. On the program: four exhibitions, including a 24-hour screening of Christian Marclay’s astonishing film The Clock; DJ Monique Giroux, who will delve into time through songs and music; tours and art workshops for families; and dance performances by MANDALA SITÙ/Virginie Brunelle.

The Clock

Starting at 6 p.m. on March 1, the MAC will be screening Christian Marclay’s The Clock continuously for 24 hours. Winner of the Golden Lion, the top prize awarded by the prestigious Venice Biennale, in 2011, Marclay is one of today’s leading creative artists and is renowned for his mastery of image, sound and editing. With The Clock, he has created a captivating, sublime work that will leave its mark on his generation. This is a golden opportunity to experience the work, which consists of a multitude of clips showing various timepieces, alarm clocks and watches, as well as actions and dialogues on the subject of time… all in real time!

Collages: Gesture and fragments

This exhibition, planned to coincide with the presentation of The Clock, features works by artists who approach the notion of collage through different disciplines: painting, sculpture, photography, sound art and participatory art. More than any other artistic medium, collage reflects a desire to harvest images from the chaos of the everyday and exploit their poetic and critical potential. Collage artists absorb anything and everything into the visual field of their works, utilizing this juxtaposition and contextualization to address issues of the day.

Adrian Paci: Lives in transit

Co-produced with Jeu de Paume, Paris, Lives in Transit presents video works and installations, along with sculptures and paintings, that examine such issues as identity and collective history within a context of migration. Paci is an Albanian-born artist with a steadily growing international reputation.

A Matter of Abstraction

This exhibition looks at the artists and artistic movements that have defined the development of abstraction since the 1940s in Québec and across Canada. It showcases seminal works from the MAC Collection, which today form a priceless collective heritage.

DJ Monique Giroux, Time through Song

In connection with Christian Marclay’s The Clock, Monique Giroux, well-known radio host from Espace Musique, will mix time with infinity from midnight to 2 a.m. at the MAC. From Pink Floyd to Charles Aznavour and Nina Simone, Giroux will invite all present to seize the moment.

Mandala Sitù Company/Virginie Brunelle

The contemporary dance company MANDALA SITÙ will perform four short choreographies dealing with gender identity. These pieces are the product of a current collaborative undertaking with choreographer Virginie Brunelle. From 9 p.m to 11:30 p.m.

Petite Nuit blanche/Tick Tock Mac Clock

Visitors of all ages are invited to join in the MAC art workshops, where they will invent their own, totally original clock, with hands and numbers pointing in every direction and featuring a whole succession of improvised characters and actions. From 6 p.m to 9 p.m.

The MAC is open for Nuit blanche à Montréal from 6 p.m. on March 1 to 6 p.m. on March 2. The Musée Boutique will be open from 6 p.m. to midnight. The Musée is located at 185, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, Place-des-Arts metro.
