La Joute is to be reopened to the public on May 15 in the Place Jean-Paul Riopelle.
The only sculpture fountain made by Riopelle (1923-2003), La Joute cuts an imposing figure in the heart of the Quartier international de Montréal. Originally installed in Montreal’s Olympic Park to mark the 1976 Summer Olympics, La Joute was relocated to the public square named in honour of the artist in 2004. The sculpture is composed of the central “Tower of Life,” surrounded by 30 bronze elements depicting some of the animals and mythical figures that marked the acclaimed artist’s childhood and imagination, including the Owl, the Fish, the Bear and the Dog. Since being moved to the square, the work also features a ring of fire, as originally intended by Riopelle. Every evening from mid-May to mid-October, the flames shoot upward in a magnificent display of mist and light.
