Inspiring, luminous and relevant, the proposal of Saucier+Perrotte Architectes / GLCRM & Associés Architectes, selected unanimously by the jury in 2018, will result in a resolutely contemporary construction fully coherent with the Museum’s raison d’être.

With this transformation, the MAC embarks, visionary and alive, on a new chapter in its history and continues its momentum to embrace its full potential.

The new MAC in 2024 will be truly exceptional. The transformed MAC will be a visible and important demonstration of Québec’s artistic know-how, in both its content and its architecture. It will offer visitors from near and far an incomparable experience. A place, featuring state-of-the-art technology, entirely designed to exhibit contemporary art in all its forms.

The amount of exhibition space will be doubled in order to better display Québec’s public collection. Currently, only 1% of the collection is accessible to the public. The new MAC will offer a greater, more versatile exhibition space that has been completely rethought so as to adapt to all the forms the art of today—and of the future—may take.

Highlights of the new MAC:

  • Close to a 100% increase in exhibition spaces and rooms.
  • Every space, from lobbies to circulation areas, have been redesigned to showcase contemporary art
  • New and expanded educational spaces
  • An exterior facade that has been transformed by the expansion of the main entrance and the added area on the 2nd floor.
  • The optimization of the Beverly-Webster-Rolph multimedia room
  • New spaces for the MAC Boutique, including a bookstore and a coffee shop

“Thanks to the MAC’s efforts to boost its offering and revitalize its presence, we now feel a major, renewed interest for contemporary art. With this transformation, we will be able to offer a place worthy of public expectations. Montreal will finally have a jewel that lives up to its ambitions, its reputation and its artistic importance.”

—John Zeppetelli, Director and Chief Curator, MAC
