Artwork description
This video by the Québec collective bgl documents part of the creative process behind their installation Postérité-les-Bains (Usine de sapins), 2009, which takes the form of a Christmas tree production facility. The installation consists of a large wooden structure with an elevated platform and a deep tub of green paint into which the dried-out trees are dipped. Freshly verdant again, the tree carcasses are hung on posts around the structure, where they drip onto a drop-cloth on the ground. Delivered in bgl’s signature critical tone, Postérité-les-Bains points to the “values” of overproduction and overconsumption that characterize popular Christmas traditions. At the same time, the work references the exploitation of our natural resources and the inherent hypocrisy of our collective acceptance of artifice for the benefit of industry, and to the detriment of nature.
